Christchurch International Airport
Christchurch Airport is the international gateway to the South Island. It is the busiest and most strategic southern air connection to the world’s trade and tourism markets, with ten airline partners offering more than 10,000 domestic, trans-Tasman and international services without curfew each year. It is also the smallest city on the planet to have a daily A380 service.
The airport welcomed more than 6.8 million passengers in the 2018 financial year and is on target to exceed that in the current financial year. It is a major driver of the South Island regional economy, with about 7000 personnel working for 250 companies on the airport campus making it the largest site of employment in the South Island. The airport is one of the partners in the SOUTH initiative, which sees all regional tourism organisations working collegially to promote the South Island internationally. Most of the South Island’s rental vehicle fleet is housed on the airport campus and more than 80% of the island’s air freight comes into two purpose-built facilities on the campus.
The airport is consistently rated by an independent international quarterly travellers’ survey as the best airport in Australia and New Zealand and was the only New Zealand airport to win a category in this year’s World Airport Awards.
