New Zealand’s natural environment is the main reason visitors come here. It plays a major part in domestic leisure travel, and forms the basis for thousands of tourism businesses. We must protect and enhance our environment for the enjoyment of future generations, and future visitors.
Sustainable Event
The Tourism Industry Association wishes to lead the way in promoting environmental sustainability which follows the principles of the New Zealand Tourism Strategy 2015 that sets out the vision for the tourism sector to take a leading role in protecting and enhancing the environment.
TRENZ 2012 environmental policy
In organising TRENZ 2012, we will encourage our suppliers, Exhibitors, Buyers, Media and visitors to adopt sound environmental practices that will reduce waste, conserve energy and other resources.
What is happening to make TRENZ 2012 a sustainable event?
TIA is working to identify new sustainability practices with our suppliers that can be implemented at TRENZ 2012. Some of the practices implemented in 2010/11 were:
- Using regionally sourced ingredients for meals
- Reducing the amount of meat served by having some vegetarian options available for mains
- Use of biodegradable water cups
- Media releases were only accepted in an online format
- Use of cloth napkins instead of paper napkins
- We recycle name badges and lanyards, and ask to return these to the main registration desk at the conclusion of TRENZ
- We will be looking to use recyclable polypropylene delegate packs again in 2012
- We will provide all related pre-event manuals to Exhibitors and Buyers as an online PDF to reduce paper usage
- We will print the Exhibitor and Buyer Directories provided onsite at TRENZ 2012 on recycled paper stock
- We aim to reduce the paper and documentation that is taken to TRENZ 2012
- We encourage Exhibitors to bring less material to TRENZ via communications pre-event
- We will provide detailed information on recycling stations for ease of use for all delegates
- We encourage delegates to use the group coach transport provided to and from the TRENZ 2012 hotels and the Queenstown Events Centre, as well as to off-site functions
- Our signage is reusable
- Booth Acceptances, invoices, communications in general (e.g. TRENZ tips) are only sent electronically
Exhibitors – you can help make TRENZ 2012 a more sustainable event

- Hire items with minimal construction or a reusable stand design
- Buy products made from recycled materials or which can be recycled
- Bring only what you need to TRENZ 2012 and take away what you don't use
Onsite
- Ensure you use the recycling stations at the venue correctly – follow the instructions provided onsite
- Reduce use of packaging material and/or ensure it is reused or recycled
